The Karachaganak field is one of three world-class Kazakh fields being developed in the North Caspian region, discovered in 1979. Although this field is inferior to the other two - Kashagan and Tengiz, the reserves of oil and condensate in Karachaganak amount to more than 1.2 billion tons, and gas - 1.35 trillion cubic meters, which allows it to be included in the top twenty leading oil and gas fields in the world in terms of explored reserves.

The industrial development of the field was started in 1984 by the Ministry of Gas Industry of the USSR. After the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991, Karachaganak became the property of the Republic of Kazakhstan and was transferred to the management of OAO Gazprom, the state-owned gas giant that was the successor to the ministry.

In March 2022, Drilling Innovation specialists had a chance to take part in the KPO Project. Only foreign companies are engaged in the development of the famous Karachaganak gas condensate field. For DI, along with foreign contractors, it was not difficult to complete their part of the work - setting a whipstock with orientation by a small-sized gyroscopic inclinometer and cutting out a technological window.
